Detroit has had an influx of supporters of Donald Trump standing outside of the TCF Center (formerly Cobo Hall) protesting the results of Michigan’s ballot-counting being in favor of former Vice President Joe Biden.
TCF Center played host to the ballot counting, which brought many Trump supporters to the outside of the building, who were banging on the windows and chanting that they should be able to watch the ballots being counted and that they believed that the ballots were fabricated, as there was a very large voter turn out, one that Governor Gretchen Whitmer said was the highest numbers for voting, saying that 5.5 million people voted in the November election, with 3.3 million absentee ballots cast.
“We shattered all records for most votes cast in the history of the state,” Whitmer said, according to WXYZ.
Yesterday, the infamous Trump Train was circling around the Crowne Plaza Hotel, spouting out Trump’s version of “facts.”
ACRONYM reached the scene at around 10 AM, and about 30+ protestors were spanning across the freeway overpass, as Detroit Police had blocked off the sidewalks outside of TCF Center. They chanted and waved their signs to people hopping onto the M-10 (The Lodge), and even began a sing-along with a leader dressed in a colonial soldier uniform.
They also touched on the subject of John James, who was going up against Senator Gary Peters for his seat. The Trump supporters began taunting the African Americans that were across the street from them, aka part of the counter-protestors, saying “We’re not racist, we love Black people! We support John James!”
According to Click on Detroit, James said in a statement Thursday, “This campaign is not about me, it never has been. It’s about the people of Michigan. Every vote must count, and every election must be fair and honest. While Sen. Peters is currently ahead, I have deep concerns that millions of Michiganders may have been disenfranchised by a dishonest few who cheat.”
James also said he will “accept the votes ‘and the will of the people’ when the process is complete. However, the Republican candidate said he believes there is enough evidence to “warrant an investigation to ensure that elections were conducted in a transparent, legal and fair manner” — though he did not explain what evidence he was referring to.”
Trump supporters were also not practicing social distancing or wearing masks, and one woman pursued a Black gentleman, screaming in his face without her mask, and getting closer to him every time he backed up before the Police intervened. The same woman also was walking around through the crowd and asking if she could hug everyone once the counter-protestors bypassed the cops who were both protecting the Trump supporters and keeping both sides separated. There was a sticky moment when the Police tried to stop everyone that wasn’t part of the Trump side getting near the Trump supporters, but eventually, everyone just walked around the officers, as many said they were in violation of our rights as citizens.
Eventually, some people got in some heated discussions but others actually discussed their viewpoints to each other in opposition, which was something we’ve not seen all that often between Trump and Biden supporters.
After a few hours, the bulk of the Trump supporters went home once the BLM group showed up, but the “Trump Train,” which is often referred to as “The Bridge,” was still parked in the area after circling the Crowne Plaza all day. ACRONYM quickly filmed an interview with the driver of the Trump Train, Rob Cortis, asking where he gets his funds, his motivation, and where he gets his information that he shares over the P.A. system.
But the Trump Train is the least of Detroit’s problems. According to a tweet from Brandon Straka, who boasts himself as the founder of the #WalkAway campaign and a born again “non-liberal gay man,” is now reaching out to Detroiters that are Trump believers that he will be in Downtown Detroit Friday morning to protest Michigan’s blue turn.

#WalkAway is described on their website as follows: “The #WalkAway Campaign is a true grassroots movement, founded by former liberal, Brandon Straka on May 26th, 2018. The #WalkAway Campaign encourages and supports those on the Left to walk away from the divisive tenets endorsed and mandated by the Democratic Party of today. We are walking away from the lies, the false narratives, the fake news, the race-baiting, the victim narrative, the violence, the vandalism, the vitriol. We are walking away from a party driven by hate. We are walking toward patriotism and a new, unified America! We are the future of this great nation!”
As far as the global reach, everyone seems to be waiting on bated breath on the counts, and national outlets like BuzzFeed News, NBC, and even some global foreign outlets had flown out to cut their teeth on the pre-show before the main event tomorrow.
If you choose to go Downtown to Detroit tomorrow, please be safe, social distance, wear a mask, and try to set an example for other protestors on your line.
