The newest song from The Killers called “Land Of The Free” has been added to other songs the band has created against our current administration, accompanied with a Spike Lee directed video.
When Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, I was waiting for Punk Rock to make a big resurgence, and totally thought Green Day or Sum 41 would lead the charge. I did not, however, expect The Killers to release Alternative Rock ballads on the subject, not that I’m complaining.
The first track they did was “Run For Cover” which alluded to fake news, senators that cheat, and depending on interpretation, when the song turns about an abusive man that she wants to trust, some took that as she meaning “the country” or she meaning “the Statue of Liberty.”
“Land Of The Free,” however, is their newest release, and there’s no leaving anything to interpretation with this track. Brandon Flowers, frontman of The Killers made comments via video which was uploaded to Beats 1‘s Instagram account. Apparently I wasn’t the only one that didn’t think The Killers was initially the right band for the job, as Flowers said he didn’t feel like he was the right guy either.
“I would start the song and then I would put it away and say ‘I’m not the guy to do this. I feel inadequate, someone is gonna write this song’ and then it just piled up with Las Vegas, Orlando, Parkland [shootings]. It just kept coming and I just thought , ‘I have to get this out’.”Brandon Flowers of The Killers, @Beats1 Instagram Video
