In a report shared by Deadline Detroit, things aren’t looking so good for the Detroit MetroTimes.
A paper and online grouping that’s reigned the better half of Detroit’s years as a paper generated on copious amounts of ads might have to pull back on printing for the foreseeable future. According to the DD report, Editor Lee DeVito, in a story today on the site, writes:
To be honest, we’re not even sure if there will be an issue next week.
Considering how much the mag relies on Bar, Cannabis, an Strip Club ads, as well as letting people know which shows are coming to town, MetroTimes simply cannot go to print with lack of ads to pay for distribution, let alone printing.
Euclid Media Group, the Metro Times’ sister paper, Cleveland Scene, “suspended print for the forseeable future starting this week,” DeVito said via text message to Deadline Detroit.

Now more than ever, the media that rely on ad packages may start to fall apart if there isn’t some sort of push down of stimulus for its companies. For smaller papers like MetroTimes to rely heavily on other businesses to survive, it’s the first of many nails in a coffin for Detroit-based papers that could potentially go under.
It is unclear when the results of COVID-19 panic will slow down, and when we can get back to business as usual, if at all, but some papers are still holding on, or operating independently (like ACRONYM ZINE) or still have ad-based client stipends for a contract date that are holding them over.
Could this be the end of many of our usual suspects? One simply just does not know at this time. But we’re riding with you, whoever is currently reading. And we intend on keeping you informed as new info comes to light.
