Joe Biden Could Decriminalize Weed in 2021. Legalizing It Is a Different Story. (Esquire)

Publish Date: January 22, 2021

THE BOTTOM LINE:

“You wouldn’t call Biden “gung-ho” about weed. The man is a teetotaler who’s likely never touched the stuff (unlike a young Barack Obama). Through most of public-facing life, Biden hadn’t been enthusiastic about cannabis legalization—or showed even lukewarm acceptance. He was anti. However, as with many of Biden’s policy positions poked to the left by more liberal contenders, the latest developments are more promising.”

‘Cannabis Factory’ Is Found in London’s Deserted Financial District (NYTimes.com)

Publish Date: January 21, 2021

THE BOTTOM LINE:

“The normal bustle of London’s financial district has been quieted by the latest national lockdown, with businesses shuttered and work shifted to home.

But the sudden lull and the unexpected vacating of prime real estate has seen at least one venture (albeit an illegal one) thrive: an indoor weed farm.

That ended this past week when police officers discovered the criminal operation, which they called a “cannabis factory,” in a basement equipped with wired lighting and ventilation tubes in a commercial building not far from the Bank of England.”

Jay-Z Joins Push to Boost Minority-Owned Cannabis Businesses (WSJ.com)

Publish Date: January 20, 2021

THE BOTTOM LINE:

“Jay-Z is launching a fund to invest in minority-owned cannabis startups to bolster Black participation in the industry.

The rapper and entrepreneur says he is motivated by an imbalance in the marijuana business: People of color, who have been disproportionately punished for involvement in the drug where it is illegal, comprise only a small number of those making money from the multibillion-dollar market in legalized pot.

“It’s really unbelievable how that can happen,” said the musical artist, born Shawn Carter. “We were the ones most negatively affected by the war on drugs, and America has turned around and created a business from it that’s worth billions.”

Adult-Use Cannabis Bill Introduced in Florida (ganjapreneur.com)

Publish Date: January 22, 2021

THE BOTTOM LINE:

“Florida state Sen. Jeff Brandes (R) has refiled a bill to legalize the sale of cannabis to anyone 21-and-older at the state’s current medical cannabis dispensaries. The measure would allow purchases of up to 2.5 ounces.

The Republican senator filed a similar measure last year, but it did not make it out of committee. The current bill does not have a companion in the House.

The bill would make underage cannabis possession a second-degree misdemeanor for the first offense and a first-degree misdemeanor on subsequent offenses. It would allow landlords to prohibit smoking or vaping cannabis on their property but does not provide an alternative for those whose landlords prohibit use and bans public consumption and social use. The measure also caps edibles at 15% THC.”
